About Pollen in Algiers

Algiers’ spring allergy season (March-May) is marked by Olive (Olea europaea) and Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) pollen; Olive trees are common in city parks like Jardin d’Essai du Hamma and surrounding agricultural areas; Cypress is frequent in urban landscaping and cemeteries. Wall Pellitory (Parietaria judaica) is also a major allergen, growing in cracks of walls and pavements. Summer (June-August) brings high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, from undeveloped plots and the Sahel hills.

Urban street canyons and tightly packed buildings can concentrate pollen, creating localised high levels. Autumn (September-November) and winter (December-February) see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, originating from decaying vegetation in city parks and damp areas along the Mediterranean coast.
