About Pollen in Hobart

Hobart’s spring allergy season (September–November) is dominated by Silver Birch (Betula pendula) and London Plane (Platanus x acerifolia) pollen; Birch prolific in residential gardens and the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens; London Plane widespread across city streets and Franklin Square. English Oak (Quercus robur) contributes significantly from the Queens Domain. Summer (December–February) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from the Derwent Valley and pastures along the Derwent River.

The steep topography of kunanyi / Mount Wellington traps pollen within the city basin; southerly winds carry spores from forested slopes. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from decomposing leaf litter in the Waterworks Reserve and damp gully environments.
