About Pollen in Sydney

Sydney’s spring allergy season (September-November) is dominated by Ryegrass and Plane tree pollen; Ryegrass (Lolium) prolific in Centennial Park; London Plane (Platanus x acerifolia) widespread across CBD streets and Hyde Park. Pellitory-of-the-wall (Parietaria judaica) contributes significantly from sandstone walls in the Eastern Suburbs. Summer (December-February) sees high Kikuyu (Cenchrus clandestinus) and Couch Grass (Cynodon dactylon) pollen levels, originating from suburban lawns and Parramatta River parklands.

Dry westerly winds carry pollen from the Blue Mountains and inland forests into the coastal basin. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from decomposing leaf litter in Lane Cove National Park and damp soils near the Hawkesbury River.
