About Pollen in Graz

Graz’s spring allergy season (February–May) is dominated by Hazel, Alder, and Birch; Hazel (Corylus) and Alder (Alnus) common in the Stadtpark; Birch (Betula) high in the Leechwald forest. Ash (Fraxinus) contributes significantly from trees along the Mur river. Summer (May–August) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from the Schlossberg slopes and Styrian meadows. Ragweed (Ambrosia) increases in late summer from fields south of the city.

The Grazer Becken traps air and creates temperature inversions, leading to high pollen counts near the ground. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from damp leaf litter in the Plabutsch forests and areas along the Mur riverbanks.
