About Pollen in Ghent

Ghent’s spring allergy season (March-May) is dominated by Birch and Ash pollen; Birch (Betula) common in Citadelpark and along the Leie riverbanks; Ash (Fraxinus) widespread in the Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen nature reserve. Oak (Quercus) contributes significantly from the Gentbrugse Meersen. Summer (May-July) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from the Blaarmeersen and surrounding Flemish meadows.

The confluence of the Scheldt and Leie rivers keeps humidity high; low-lying wetlands trap allergens near the city center. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from decaying organic matter in the Drongen parklands and damp canal corridors.
