About Pollen in Sarajevo
Sarajevo’s spring allergy season (March-May) is dominated by Birch and Ash pollen; Silver Birch (Betula pendula) is common on the slopes of Mount Trebević and in Vrelo Bosne; European Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) is widespread along Wilson’s Promenade. Summer (June-August) has high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from Mount Igman and Ilidža meadows. Ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) is high in late summer from suburban fields.
The city’s basin geography and winter inversions trap pollen within the valley walls. Autumn and winter have high Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from leaf litter in Velika Aleja and damp riverside environments.
