About Pollen in Belo Horizonte

Belo Horizonte’s spring allergy season (September-November) is dominated by Trumpet Tree and Grass pollen; Pink Trumpet Tree (Handroanthus impetiginosus) widespread in Parque Municipal and Savassi; Grass (Poaceae) high near Lagoa da Pampulha and Parque das Mangabeiras. Pine (Pinus) and Cypress (Cupressus) contribute significantly from the slopes of Serra do Curral. Summer (December-March) sees high grass pollen levels along city green belts and Pampulha shorelines.

The city’s bowl-shaped topography can trap particles against the Serra do Curral ridge; high humidity is a factor for fungal growth. Mould (Aspergillus, Cladosporium) spore counts are high in damp urban pockets and near the Arrudas River. Decaying organic matter in the tropical heat is a source for these spores.
