About Pollen in São Paulo

São Paulo’s spring allergy season (September-November) is dominated by Grass (Poaceae) pollen; levels are high along the Tietê River and in Ibirapuera Park. Tipu Tree (Tipuana tipu) is common across city streets; Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus) and Pine (Pinus) are concentrated in Cantareira State Park. Winter (June-August) has elevated Cypress (Cupressaceae) pollen. Summer (December-February) has high grass counts because of humid tropical conditions.

Thermal inversions trap pollen near the ground; the Serra da Cantareira hills restrict airflow across the urban basin. Autumn and winter have elevated Mould (Aspergillus, Penicillium) spore counts; these originate from the Pinheiros River banks and decomposing leaf litter in the Atlantic Forest margins.
