About Pollen in Edmonton

Edmonton’s spring allergy season (April-May) is dominated by Birch and Poplar pollen; Birch (Betula) is concentrated in the North Saskatchewan River Valley; Poplar (Populus) is widespread in Mill Creek Ravine and William Hawrelak Park. Willow (Salix) contributes from various riverbank areas. Summer (June-August) has high Grass (Poaceae) levels, originating from Terwillegar Park and surrounding prairies.

Dry prairie winds and the sunken river valley can trap pollen, leading to high concentrations in low-lying neighbourhoods. Autumn has elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) counts, from decaying leaf litter in the river valley forest and damp garden soil.
