About Pollen in Victoria

Victoria’s spring allergy season (February-May) has high tree pollen levels; Red Alder (Alnus rubra) is common near the Gorge Waterway; Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) is found throughout Goldstream Provincial Park. Garry Oak (Quercus garryana) pollen is high near Beacon Hill Park and Fairfield. Summer (May-August) has Grass (Poaceae) pollen; these allergens originate from the open meadows of Mount Douglas Park and surrounding residential lawns.

Coastal winds from the Juan de Fuca Strait disperse pollen; the Olympic Mountains create a rain shadow that keeps local air dry. Autumn and winter have high Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) counts; these spores come from decaying foliage in the temperate rainforest and damp coastal soils.
