About Pollen in Winnipeg

Winnipeg’s spring allergy season (April-June) has high levels of Manitoba Maple (Acer negundo) and Birch (Betula); these trees are common in Assiniboine Park and Kildonan Park. Oak (Quercus) and Ash (Fraxinus) contribute pollen from the Red River and Assiniboine River banks. Summer (June-August) brings high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels; Ragweed (Ambrosia) dominates the late summer and autumn (August-October) across open prairie spaces.

Flat prairie geography and high winds transport pollen over long distances into the urban centre. Autumn has elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts; these spores come from decaying vegetation in St. Vital Park and damp soil near the Forks.
