About Pollen in Santiago
Santiago’s spring allergy season (September-November) is dominated by Plane and Poplar pollen; Oriental Plane (Platanus orientalis) prolific along the Mapocho River and in Parque Forestal; Poplar (Populus) widespread throughout city streets and plazas. Oak (Quercus) contributes significantly near Cerro San Cristóbal. Summer (December-February) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from Parque O’Higgins and suburban hillsides.
The Andes Mountains and the coastal range trap air pollutants and pollen, leading to high concentrations in the city basin. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from decomposing leaf litter in city parks and moisture along the San Carlos Canal.
