About Pollen in Beijing

Beijing’s spring allergy season (March-May) is dominated by Poplar and Willow pollen; Poplar (Populus) common along the Liangma River; Willow (Salix) widespread in Chaoyang Park. Cypress (Cupressus) contributes significantly from the Temple of Heaven grounds. Autumn (August-October) sees high Mugwort (Artemisia) and Ragweed (Ambrosia) counts, originating from the Western Hills. Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels are high in the Olympic Forest Park.

Dry, windy conditions carry dust and pollen across the urban center. Mountains to the north and west trap air masses over the city. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from decaying vegetation in the Summer Palace grounds and damp city environments.
