About Pollen in Chengdu

Chengdu’s spring allergy season (March-May) is dominated by Willow and Chinese Wingnut pollen; Willow (Salix) prolific along the Jinjiang River; Chinese Wingnut (Pterocarya stenoptera) widespread in People’s Park. Cypress (Cupressus) contributes significantly from the Longquan Mountains. Summer (June-August) sees high Grass (Poaceae) and Mugwort (Artemisia) pollen levels, originating from Huanhuaxi Park and Qingyang Palace gardens.

The Sichuan Basin topography traps air masses and limits pollen dispersal, leading to high particulate concentrations. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from decomposing leaf litter in bamboo groves and damp city environments.
