About Pollen in Zagreb

Zagreb’s spring allergy season (February-May) is dominated by Birch and Ash pollen; Birch (Betula) prolific on Medvednica slopes and in Maksimir Park; Ash (Fraxinus) widespread along the Sava River. Oak (Quercus) contributes significantly from Tuškanac forest. Summer (May-July) sees high Grass (Poaceae) levels, originating from Bundek Park; autumn (August-September) is dominated by Common Ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) from southern fields.

The Medvednica mountain range blocks northern winds; this traps pollen within the city basin. Airflow along the Sava valley carries allergens from the surrounding Pannonian plain. Autumn sees high Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from decomposing leaf litter in the Lower Town and damp river environments.
