Brno’s spring allergy season (March-May) is dominated by Birch and Alder pollen; Birch (Betula) prolific in Lužánky Park and around Špilberk Hill; Alder (Alnus) arrives from the Svratka and Svitava riverbanks. Summer (May-August) sees high Grass (Poaceae) levels, originating from the slopes of Hády and fields near Mariánské údolí. Ragweed (Ambrosia) and Mugwort (Artemisia) are common across the South Moravian plains.
The city’s basin geography and surrounding hills trap pollen; air remains stagnant in the urban center. Autumn and winter have high Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) counts, from decomposing leaf litter in the Brno Reservoir forests and damp river corridors.
