About Pollen in Quito

Quito’s dry season (June-September) is dominated by Eucalyptus and Pine pollen; Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) dense on the slopes of Pichincha and within Parque Metropolitano Guangüiltagua; Monterey Pine (Pinus radiata) common across hills like Itchimbía. Kikuyu Grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) contributes year-round allergens from lawns in Parque La Carolina and El Ejido. The dry season also sees high Black Wattle (Acacia mearnsii) pollen levels, originating from trees in urban plazas.

High altitude and Andean winds move pollen through the inter-Andean valley; steep mountain slopes trap particles in urban basins. The wet season (October-May) sees high Mould (Aspergillus, Penicillium) spore counts, from damp masonry in the Historic Center and wet vegetation along the Machángara River.
