About Pollen in Turku

Turku’s spring (April-May) is dominated by Birch and Alder pollen; Birch (Betula) is dense in Ruissalo and Kupittaa Park; Alder (Alnus) is common along the Aura River banks. Hazel (Corylus) is early in Samppalinna. Summer (June-August) has high Grass (Poaceae) levels from local meadows; Mugwort (Artemisia) is near the Port of Turku and disturbed urban soil.

The coastal archipelago air has high humidity; the Aura River valley traps pollen on calm days. Autumn and winter have high Mould (Cladosporium, Alternaria) counts; these spores are from leaf litter in the Ruissalo oak forests and damp residential environments.
