About Pollen in Nuremberg

Nuremberg’s spring allergy season (February-May) is dominated by Hazel and Alder pollen; Hazel (Corylus avellana) prolific in the Sebalder Reichswald and Lorenzer Reichswald forests; Alder (Alnus glutinosa) widespread along the Pegnitz River. Silver Birch (Betula pendula) contributes significantly from surrounding sandy woodlands. Summer (May-August) sees high Meadow Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from the Pegnitz meadows and open spaces around the Dutzendteich lakes.

The city’s basin topography and the Pegnitz Valley can trap air masses, leading to localised high pollen concentrations. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from damp leaf litter in Marienbergpark and the humid riverside environments.
