About Pollen in Guatemala City

Guatemala City’s dry season (November–April) has high Oak and Pine pollen; Oak (Quercus) is common in Parque Minerva and Kaminaljuyu; Pine (Pinus) is frequent on the hills of Cerro El Naranjo. Bermuda Grass (Cynodon dactylon) pollen increases from February to June; it grows in Parque Centenario and along Paseo de la Reforma. Johnson Grass (Sorghum halepense) is present in open fields near La Aurora.

The deep valley topography traps allergens; mountain breezes move pollen from the nearby Sierra Madre. The rainy season (May–October) has high Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) levels; moisture from the Motagua River valley and decaying organic matter in urban ravines increase spore counts. Aspergillus (Aspergillus) is frequent in damp city structures.
