About Pollen in Reykjavik

Reykjavik’s spring allergy season (May-June) is dominated by Birch and Rowan pollen; Birch (Betula pubescens) prolific in Hallargardur Park and the Elliðaár Valley; Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) widespread across residential gardens. Summer (July-August) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from Heiðmörk forest and meadows around Lake Tjörnin.

Strong North Atlantic winds disperse pollen over the coastal capital; low-rise buildings provide little shelter from airborne particles. Autumn sees elevated Mould (Cladosporium, Alternaria) spore counts, from decomposing leaf litter near the Elliðaár river and damp parklands.
