About Pollen in Pune

Pune’s dry winter and summer months (October-May) are dominated by Parthenium and Indian Elm; Parthenium (Parthenium hysterophorus) is common across Vetal Tekdi and along Mula-Mutha River banks. Indian Elm (Holoptelea integrifolia) is widespread near Empress Garden and Savitribai Phule Pune University. Post-monsoon months see high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from Pashan Lake and Parvati Hill.

Hills surrounding the city create a bowl effect; this geography traps pollen and pollutants during temperature inversions. The monsoon season (June-September) has high Mould (Aspergillus, Penicillium) counts, from damp building walls and decaying vegetation in the Sahyadri foothills.
