About Pollen in Bologna

Bologna’s spring allergy season (March–May) is dominated by Cypress and Olive pollen; Cypress (Cupressus) prolific in the Colli Bolognesi hills; Olive (Olea europaea) widespread across the surrounding countryside. Wall Pellitory (Parietaria judaica) is present on historic city walls. Oak (Quercus) contributes significantly from Giardini Margherita and Parco della Montagnola. Summer (May–July) has high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from the Reno River riverbanks and rural plains.

Urban porticoes and the city’s basin geography can trap pollen, leading to localised high concentrations. Autumn and winter have high Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from decomposing leaf litter in the foothills and damp urban environments.
