Pollen Count & Forecast for Catania
About Pollen in Catania
Catania’s spring allergy season (February–May) is dominated by Wall Pellitory and Olive pollen; Wall Pellitory (Parietaria) prolific in stone walls and Villa Bellini; Olive (Olea europaea) widespread across the lower slopes of Mount Etna. Cypress (Cupressus) is frequent in Parco Gioeni and urban cemeteries. Summer (May–July) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from the Simeto River banks and dry plains south of the city.
Proximity to Mount Etna causes volcanic dust to mix with pollen; sea breezes from the Ionian Sea push allergens into the city centre. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from humid vegetation in the Botanical Garden of Catania and damp coastal environments.
