About Pollen in Milan

Milan’s spring allergy season (March-May) is dominated by Birch and Plane pollen; Birch (Betula) is common in Parco Sempione and Giardini Pubblici Indro Montanelli; London Plane (Platanus x acerifolia) is widespread across city boulevards. Pellitory-of-the-wall (Parietaria) is common on old stone walls near the Navigli canals. Summer (May-July) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from Parco Nord Milano and along the Naviglio Grande banks.

The Po Valley basin traps air pollutants and pollen; stagnant air causes high concentrations at street level. Autumn and winter see high Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from decaying leaf litter in Parco delle Cave and damp areas along the Lambro river.
