About Pollen in Kitakyushu

Kitakyushu’s spring (February-April) is dominated by Cedar and Cypress pollen; Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) prolific on Mount Sarakura and Mount Adachi; Japanese Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) widespread across the forested hillsides. Oak (Quercus) contributes to counts from Takatoyama Park. Summer (May-August) has high Grass (Poaceae) levels, originating from the Murasaki River banks and Katsuyama Park. Autumn (September-October) has Ragweed (Ambrosia) and Mugwort (Artemisia) in open spaces along the Onga River.

The surrounding mountain ranges and urban basins trap pollen; sea breezes from the Hibiki-nada Sea carry particles inland. Autumn and winter have Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spores, from damp riverbanks and decomposing leaf litter in the Kawachi Reservoir forests.
