About Pollen in Sapporo

Sapporo’s spring season (April-June) is dominated by White Birch (Betula platyphylla); prolific in Maruyama Park and on the Hokkaido University campus; Alder (Alnus) common along the Toyohira River. Summer (June-August) sees high Grass (Poaceae) counts; sources include Moerenuma Park and fields near the Ishikari River. Autumn (August-October) has high Mugwort (Artemisia) levels along suburban hillsides.

Mountainous terrain around Mount Moiwa and the Ishikari Plain can funnel pollen into urban areas. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) counts, from damp leaf litter and snowmelt in Nopporo Forest Park and city gardens.
