About Pollen in Mombasa

Mombasa’s early-year allergy season (January-March) is dominated by Mango and Casuarina pollen; Mango (Mangifera indica) prolific in Nyali and Bamburi; Casuarina (Casuarina equisetifolia) widespread along Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach. Neem (Azadirachta indica) contributes to counts along urban roads. The post-rain period (June-July) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from Tudor Creek and Haller Park.

High coastal humidity and onshore winds trap allergens against the mainland. The tropical climate sees high Mould (Aspergillus, Penicillium) counts year-round; spores are constant near the mangrove swamps of Mtwapa Creek and shaded sections of Shimba Hills.
