About Pollen in Antananarivo

Antananarivo’s dry season (May-October) has high pollen levels from Blue Gum (Eucalyptus globulus); trees are common on the hills of Analamanga and around Lake Anosy. Silver Wattle (Acacia dealbata) flowers during these cooler months; plants grow along the Ikopa River banks. The warmer rainy season (November-April) increases Bermuda Grass (Cynodon dactylon) pollen; grass is found throughout Tsimbazaza Park. Khasya Pine (Pinus kesiya) contributes to counts from surrounding highland forests.

Steep hills and narrow valleys trap air; pollen lingers in the lower town areas. High humidity during summer months raises Mould (Aspergillus, Penicillium) spore levels; spores are common near the humid marshlands of the Betsimitatatra plain and damp city buildings.
