About Pollen in Valletta

Valletta’s spring allergy season (February-May) is dominated by Pellitory and Olive pollen; Pellitory-of-the-wall (Parietaria judaica) is prolific on limestone fortifications and city walls; Olive (Olea europaea) is common near Upper Barrakka Gardens and Hastings Garden. Grass (Poaceae) is in the Floriana ditches. Summer (June-August) sees high Goosefoot (Chenopodium) levels, originating from the Grand Harbour waterfront.

Narrow street grids and high stone bastions trap pollen; sea breezes carry allergens across the peninsula. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Aspergillus, Penicillium) spore counts, from damp stone cellars and historic masonry during the wet months.
