About Pollen in Ulaanbaatar

Ulaanbaatar’s spring (April-May) is dominated by Birch (Betula) and Willow (Salix); Birch is common on the slopes of Bogd Khan Mountain; Willow grows along the Tuul River. Poplar (Populus) is found near Sukhbaatar Square and central parks. Summer (July-August) has high Mugwort (Artemisia) and Grass (Poaceae) levels; Mugwort is common in vacant lots and the ger districts; Grass thrives in the National Garden Park.

Dry winds and high altitude carry pollen from surrounding forests into the mountain basin; the valley geography traps particles at street level. Late summer and autumn have Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spores; these originate from the river basin marshes and damp soils near the city perimeter.
