About Pollen in Kathmandu

Kathmandu’s spring (March-May) is dominated by Pine and Alder pollen; Chir Pine (Pinus roxburghii) dense on Shivapuri and Nagarjun hills; Himalayan Alder (Alnus nepalensis) common along the Bagmati River. Oak (Quercus) contributes significantly from the Gokarna Forest Reserve. Late summer (July-September) sees high Grass (Poaceae) and Mugwort (Artemisia) levels, originating from Ratna Park and along Bagmati riverbanks.

The valley’s bowl-shaped topography traps particles during winter temperature inversions. Autumn and monsoon months see high Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from damp areas near Ranipokhari and decaying vegetation in the Godawari Botanical Garden.
