About Pollen in Groningen

Groningen’s spring allergy season (March-May) is dominated by Birch and Alder pollen; Birch (Betula) common in Noorderplantsoen and Stadspark; Alder (Alnus) widespread along the Reitdiep and Diepenring canals. Oak (Quercus) has high counts in the Sterrebos and southern wooded areas. Summer (May-July) has high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from Hoornsemeer polders and Reitdiep riverbanks.

Open polders and flat terrain allow wind to transport pollen into the city; coastal breezes from the Wadden Sea influence dispersal patterns. Autumn and winter have high Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from decaying leaf litter in parklands and damp city outskirts.
