About Pollen in Rotterdam

Rotterdam’s spring allergy season (March–May) is dominated by Birch and Ash pollen; Birch (Betula) is prolific in Kralingse Bos and Het Park; Ash (Fraxinus) is widespread along Westersingel. Oak (Quercus) contributes significantly to counts in Vroesenpark. Summer (May–August) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels; these originate from Zuiderpark and along Maas riverbanks.

Coastal winds from the North Sea disperse pollen; the dense street grid traps particles in low-lying urban areas. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts; these come from decomposing leaf litter in Museumpark and the damp harbour districts.
