About Pollen in Utrecht

Utrecht’s spring allergy season (March–May) is dominated by Birch and Oak pollen; Birch (Betula) common in Wilhelminapark and along the Oudegracht; Oak (Quercus) dense within the Amelisweerd woods. Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) contributes significantly from trees lining city canals. Summer (May–July) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from the open fields of Maximapark and grassy banks of the Vaartsche Rijn.

Flat polder geography and proximity to the Utrechtse Heuvelrug forests allow windborne pollen to reach the city center. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from decaying organic matter in Griftpark and damp environments near the Kromme Rijn.
