About Pollen in Wellington

Wellington’s spring allergy season (September-November) is dominated by Pine and Gorse pollen; Pine (Pinus radiata) is prolific in the Town Belt and surrounding hills; Gorse (Ulex europaeus) is widespread across Mount Victoria. Privet (Ligustrum) contributes significantly from suburban gardens. Summer (December-February) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from the Wellington Botanic Garden and Ian Galloway Park.

Strong coastal winds frequently disperse pollen; steep hillsides and narrow valleys can trap allergens in sheltered suburbs. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from decomposing leaf litter in Otari-Wilton’s Bush and damp urban environments.
