About Pollen in Skopje

Skopje’s spring allergy season (March–May) is dominated by Birch and Poplar pollen; Birch (Betula) is prolific in City Park and along the Vardar River. Poplar (Populus), Oak (Quercus), and Pine (Pinus) pollen originates from the slopes of Vodno Mountain. Summer (May–July) sees high Grass (Poaceae) levels; sources include fields near Saraj and suburban outskirts. Late summer (August–October) has peak Ragweed (Ambrosia) counts; this plant is widespread in vacant urban lots across the Skopje Valley.

The city’s basin location and frequent temperature inversions trap airborne particles; surrounding mountains limit wind dispersion. Autumn and winter have high Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore levels; sources include damp leaf piles in Gradski Park and riverbank vegetation.
