About Pollen in Muscat

Muscat’s spring allergy season (February–April) is dominated by Prosopis (Prosopis juliflora) and Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera); Prosopis prolific in Wadi Al Kabir and near the Al Hajar Mountains; Date Palm widespread along Sultan Qaboos Street and Al Riyam Park. Grasses (Poaceae) contribute significantly from irrigated areas like Qurum Natural Park. Acacia (Acacia tortilis) species are present along desert fringes.

Coastal humidity and mountain barriers trap airborne particles; sea breezes carry pollen inland from wadi systems. Late summer and autumn see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from high humidity near the Muttrah Corniche and damp city environments. Dust storms from the desert also transport mineral irritants throughout the city.
