About Pollen in Karachi

Karachi’s year-round allergy cycle is dominated by Mesquite and Paper Mulberry pollen; Mesquite (Prosopis juliflora) common in Hill Park and the Malir River basin; Paper Mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) widespread across northern residential districts. Carrot Grass (Parthenium hysterophorus) contributes significantly from wasteland near the city edges. Summer (May-August) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from Bin Qasim Park and the Lyari River banks.

Coastal humidity and sea breezes can trap particulate matter near the Karachi Port area. The monsoon season (July-September) sees elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from damp coastal mangroves and stagnant urban runoff.
