About Pollen in Faro

Faro’s spring allergy season (March-June) is dominated by Olive and Pellitory-of-the-wall pollen; Olive (Olea europaea) prolific in the Barrocal hills and Gambelas; Pellitory-of-the-wall (Parietaria judaica) widespread across the stone walls of the Cidade Velha. Pine (Pinus pinaster) and Cork Oak (Quercus suber) contribute significantly from the Ludo forest and Ria Formosa borders. Summer (May-August) sees high Grass (Poaceae) levels, in the salt marshes and along the Formosa lagoon.

Coastal winds and the lagoon environment affect pollen dispersal, often concentrating levels near the city. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from the damp marshlands of the Ria Formosa Natural Park and irrigated farmland near Montenegro.
