About Pollen in Lisbon

Lisbon’s spring allergy season (March–June) is dominated by Olive and Plane pollen; Olive (Olea europaea) prolific in Monsanto Forest Park; Plane (Platanus x acerifolia) widespread across Avenida da Liberdade. Oak (Quercus) contributes significantly from Tapada da Ajuda. Summer sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from Tagus River banks. Pellitory-of-the-wall (Parietaria judaica) is common on the stone walls of Alfama.

Steep hills and narrow streets in the city center trap pollen, leading to localised high concentrations. Winter sees elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from damp historic masonry and decaying leaf litter in Jardim da Estrela. High humidity levels along the riverfront sustain these fungal concentrations.
