About Pollen in Moscow

Moscow’s spring allergy season (April-May) is dominated by Birch and Alder pollen; Silver Birch (Betula pendula) prolific in Gorky Park and Sokolniki Park; Grey Alder (Alnus incana) widespread across Izmaylovsky Park. Hazel (Corylus avellana) contributes significantly from urban green belts. Summer (June-August) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from Sparrow Hills and along Moskva River riverbanks; Mugwort (Artemisia) is common in open areas.

The city’s flat topography and vast forest belts allow pollen to travel long distances. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from damp leaf litter in Losiny Ostrov and Bitsevsky Forest.
