About Pollen in Durban

Durban’s spring allergy season (August-October) is dominated by Sweet Thorn and Plane pollen; Sweet Thorn (Vachellia karroo) is prolific in Burman Bush; London Plane (Platanus x acerifolia) is common along inner-city avenues. Pine (Pinus) contributes significantly from Pigeon Valley. Summer (November-February) sees high Bermuda Grass (Cynodon dactylon) and Guinea Grass (Megathyrsus maximus) pollen levels, originating from Umgeni River banks and Mitchell Park.

High humidity and coastal winds trap pollen against the Berea ridge. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from decaying organic matter near the Bluff and Durban Botanic Gardens.
