About Pollen in Johannesburg

Johannesburg’s spring allergy season (September-November) is dominated by Plane and Oak pollen; London Plane (Platanus x acerifolia) widespread in Houghton and Rosebank; Oak (Quercus) prolific in older suburban gardens and The Wilds. Wattle (Acacia) contributes significantly from Melville Koppies and along the Braamfontein Spruit. Summer (November-March) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from Delta Park and Emmarentia Dam.

The Highveld’s dry winter winds lift dust and pollen; high altitude and low humidity increase allergen suspension. Late summer and autumn see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from damp leaf litter in James & Ethel Gray Park and residential gardens after seasonal thunderstorms.
