About Pollen in Pretoria

Pretoria’s spring allergy season (August–October) is dominated by Sweet Thorn and Plane pollen; Sweet Thorn (Vachellia karroo) prolific in the Groenkloof Nature Reserve; London Plane (Platanus x acerifolia) widespread across Sunnyside and Arcadia streets. Common Privet (Ligustrum vulgare) contributes significantly from Waterkloof gardens. Summer (October–February) sees high Bermuda Grass (Cynodon dactylon) pollen levels, originating from the Fountains Valley and along Apies River banks.

The Magaliesberg mountains and local topography can trap pollen, leading to localised high concentrations. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from decomposing leaf litter in Jan Cilliers Park and damp city environments.
