About Pollen in Seoul

Seoul’s spring allergy season (March-May) is dominated by Oak and Pine pollen; Oak (Quercus) prolific on Namsan Park slopes; Pine (Pinus) originating from Bukhansan National Park. Birch (Betula) contributes significantly from Seoul Forest. Summer (June-August) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels along Han River banks. Autumn (September-October) sees high Mugwort (Artemisia) and Ragweed (Ambrosia) levels, originating from vacant lots and city outskirts.

Mountain ranges and the Han River basin can trap pollen, leading to localised high concentrations; yellow dust from the Gobi Desert worsens respiratory symptoms. Late summer and autumn see high Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from humid park leaf litter and damp urban environments.
