About Pollen in Granada

Granada’s spring season (April–June) is dominated by Olive and Pellitory pollen; Olive (Olea europaea) groves widespread in the Genil Valley and surrounding foothills; Pellitory (Parietaria judaica) prolific along old stone walls in the Albayzín. Cypress (Cupressus) contributes significantly from the Alhambra gardens and Generalife during winter. Summer (May–July) sees high Grass (Poaceae) pollen levels, originating from the Vega de Granada.

Mountain breezes from the Sierra Nevada transport pollen down to the city; narrow streets and urban squares can trap pollen, leading to localised high concentrations. Autumn and winter see elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts, from damp soils along the Darro River and decomposing leaf litter in the Dehesa del Generalife.
