About Pollen in Madrid
Madrid’s winter allergy season (January–March) is dominated by Cypress pollen; Cypress (Cupressus) common in Retiro Park; London Plane (Platanus x acerifolia) widespread along Paseo del Prado during spring (March–May). Olive (Olea europaea) comes from groves south of the city; Holm Oak (Quercus ilex) is common in Casa de Campo. Summer (May–July) has peak Grass (Poaceae) counts, originating from Manzanares riverbanks and the dry Meseta.
Dry air and high altitude aid pollen dispersal; Sierra de Guadarrama winds carry particles into urban streets. Autumn and winter have elevated Mould (Alternaria, Cladosporium) spore counts; these are in leaf litter in the Royal Botanical Garden and near the Manzanares River.
