About Cock's-foot Pollen
Cock’s-foot, known as orchard grass in North America, is a coarse, tussock-forming pasture grass found on roadsides, waste ground and meadows across Europe, North America and temperate Asia. It is one of the most strongly allergenic grasses. Its group 1 and group 5 allergens cross-react with those of timothy and ryegrass, so it belongs to the same grass pollen allergy as they do.
In the temperate northern hemisphere it flowers from May to July, a little earlier than timothy, and its distinctive clumped flower heads are easy to spot on verges in early summer. In the southern hemisphere, where it is also naturalised, the season runs roughly October to January instead. Like other grasses it sheds most pollen on warm, dry, breezy days, with counts dropping sharply after rain.
