About Timothy Grass Pollen
Timothy is a tall hay-meadow grass grown across the temperate world for fodder. In allergy clinics it is the reference grass: its allergens Phl p 1 and Phl p 5 are the ones most grass-pollen extracts, skin tests and immunotherapy tablets are standardised against. A positive timothy test usually points to a wider allergy to the other temperate, cool-season grasses (ryegrass, cocksfoot, fescue and the meadow grasses), whose proteins closely resemble timothy’s. It is a much poorer guide to warm-climate grasses such as Bermuda or Bahia grass, which sit on a more distant branch of the grass family.
It flowers later than many grasses, from June into July in most of Europe and North America, which keeps the grass season going after the earlier meadow grasses have finished. Counts are highest on warm, dry days with a breeze, and fall away quickly in wet weather.
